Q: I live in the UK and have just switched ISP’s. When I finally got connected with the new company my Internet connection worked fine for roughly an hour and then just stopped, yet my phone continues to work although there is now a lot of noise on the line. I’ve been on the phone to their tech department three times so far and was told the line to my house is fine and I should try changing the microfilter, which hasn’t worked and now my phone has stopped working so I cant even call them back. I’m getting really frustrated with this, do you have any suggestions at all that might at least get my internet working again?

A: If you are plugging the Microfilter into a phone extension cable this could possibly be one of  the causes. Try plugging the Microfilter directly into the phone box if possible and try that. If that still doesn’t work and you say you’ve already tried another Microflter, then it would seem you may have a faulty phone box.

If you do not mind getting a little hands on, you can unscrew the face plate on the phone box, and inside you will see another phone socket. Try plugging your Microfilter into that socket and see if your internet or phone comes back. If they do, or if only the internet or phone works this way, then you should call your ISP and get them to send an engineer out to check the phone box.
